Everytime I start my Windows ME laptop I get a message
saying that install.exe caused an error. I can click OK
and it goes away with no aparent problems. What can I do
to get rid of this? I suspect there are problems that I
don't know about.

Jason,

Go to Start, Run, type in msconfig, click OK or press Enter.
Click the Startup tab. Is install.exe listed ? If so, uncheck the box
next to it and note where it's located on the system. Click Apply, then OK.

This will stop it from loading at startup. The question is, did you
install some software and not do the required reboot or is this a
deviant installation ?

If you do not recall attempting to install something with install.exe
as the executable, advise you to scan the system for viral or malware
presence.

If you have attempted to install some software (Windows Messenger's
setup program is named install.exe ) and did not reboot, advise to see
if it's listed in Add/Remove Programs. If so, uninstall, reboot, then
reinstall it. Let the system reboot to finish if required ( Windows
Messenger does not require this on XP; not sure about ME).
Otherwise, delete install.exe from the system manually.
