I am working on a Windows ME system and received the following error message.
"Rundll32 has caused an error in MMSYSTEM.DLL. Rundll32 will not close." I
have received this error while trying to diagnose a video problem. It will
not move from 16 colors. I have attempted to put another video card in the
AGP slot without any luck. Also screen resolution will not change from
640x480. When I go to advance I get the previous messge about the Rundll32
message. Any help would be greatful.
Thanks...Sam

Try this:-
Boot to Safe Mode
Open device Manager
REMOVE ALL INSTANCES of ALL Display Adapters, and all Monitors
Reboot to Normal Mode - Windows will reinstall the hopefully) correct
drivers
See if that helps

Hi Noel,
I apologize for taking so long getting back to you. I tried the ideas you
sent but nothing worked. I then realized that the Win9x folder I created was
missing. Apparently is was corrupted. Helpctr would not work, control panel
would not work, many of the standard windows would not work. I then removed
what data I could and formated the drive. Now everything works. I would
have preferred not to do it this way but I think this was the only way
possible. Thanks for all your help and when I need to I will contact the
discussion group again. So long for now and once again, thanks. Sam

Thanks for coming back at all! :)

Glad you were able to retrieve at least some of your data before having to
reformat - sounds like the system was pretty badly screwed (to use a
technical term <g>), and that was your most effective means of recovery.
Well done, and good luck
