Just checking, in case MS had a fit and cut us off at the knees a day early

AFAIK, there's still no 9x support forums whatsoever - at least in English
(unless I've been looking in the wrong places)

Some of the long time 'regulars' in the W98 groups have made formal
requests for forums for legacy OS forums and they have point blank been
told that W9x is obsolete and unsupported and that there will be no
forums for these legacy products. They were told that they should
upgrade to a newer operating system... so some of them are upgrading to
something that isn't Microsoft. I wonder if Microsoft expects them to
upgrade their Windows 98 boxes to Windows 7...

In essence we are left to ourselves with our 'obsolete' systems and , if we
intend
to keep it, we better know how to operate and/or fix it, if necessary.
They simply cannot be bothered anymore
That should be understandable, shouldn't it?
As for myself, I'm fine with that.
But I certainly miss this good company forever.

trying to sort out how to make this bridge thing work. I did come across a
couple of XP ones but don't think I've manage to actually get any messages

which bridge are you using, Joan? - the 'official' one(s) or the one that
works? <g>

I'm still using the 'official' ones until the other one settles down
build-wise - it had something like 5 releases in one day last week!

At present I've got the Microsoft Forums NNTP Bridge, and the connectnews.
one which I think I'm way behind in builds, think I've got 13.
I can only get the announcement and discussion lot in the connect, and with
the other using 127 etc: I have a long list of groups but can't get that
working today, when I tell it to start it gives me the message that only one
socket can be used and doesn't let me go any further. grrrrrrrrr

Greetings to all.

Never been much for giving (useable) advice, but have come to appreciate
this little area for help and insight to the workings of my ole ME op sys..

I started back in the day when you built your own computer and then did
the op sys programming by hand.
We then moved on to DOS as a common platform for others programs.
and then to windows as a platform which was even more common with hundreds
of custom programs..

Then somewhere during all that Microsoft got so large as a platform
supplier they began to think of themselves as lords of the computer..

"my way or the highway" seemed to be their company motto.

with the internet, they have even gotten more grandiose with themselves.
(dare I say god like in self promotion)

Microsoft even now considers governments should bend the knee to the kings
in Redmond..

But I digress,

I shall miss the lively banter of truths often found here over how ME
should or does work.. :o)

to quote an old sage, "Live long and Prosper"

Till we meet again on some other News Group...

I was going to suggest that the last person here turns out the lights before
they leave, but then realised that will not be necessary as they will go out
the moment MS pulls the plug. They've obviously thought of everything -
except their "legacy" customers.

I am going to miss you all SO MUCH!!!!! I hated to write a goodbye post, so
held off. I had a great time remembering over 10 years of good times on
this ng.......like when Mike and the OE guys were all at the MVP gala eons
ago and the only ones holding down the fort were myself and Noel........that
is how we met. The blind leading the blind, lol. And Majik was over on OE
frantically trying to deal with stuff while his good buddy Steve C was
hoisting more than a few.....lol.

Lots of fun things to remember. I am only remembering those. We have had
our share of wannabees and self-proclaimed X-spurts on WinME, but no one
will ever hold a candle to Mikey!! And I wanted to call you that one last
time, Sir Michael of London. (VBG)

When we went to the UK in 2004, we met up with Noel in Chester for dinner
(where he scared all the little old ladies) and I tried to pass an
out-of-date 5 (?) pound note......lordy, that was funny!! Poor Noel!! And
we had a wonderful, sumptuous feast in London with Mike and lots of yakking.
Poor Mike!! I have been enjoying all of the memories while my *rememberer*
still works, grin. Oh, and sitting in the pub with Noel chatting to Joanie
on his mobile....hang the cost, eh??

Then Noel had to babysit my daughter Elayne when she went to Scotland and
England the next year. I somehow don't think he minded that too much,
snicker. The Mouse sends her best to you as well. She is recovering from
nasty dental surgery, so is also one of the *walking wounded*.

Yes, we have all had our ups and downs healthwise, but what the heck, it
must be at least 10 years that we have known each other. I look forward to
one day meeting up with John John if we ever get back to the Maritimes.
Would love to go back to England, but don't think that will happen
unfortunately. Damn, who else have I missed. Mart, how did we not meet up
on our trip in 2004?? And I was so darn close to where you are. And the
Loon....I phoned him when Katrina hit......he sure talks funny, but then he
is a Texas Merkin. (G)

So my darlings........I will gather up all the Maxines I can find and send
them to you all.......that old broad kind of reminds me of myself, grin.
She is an outspoken, outrageous old lady and I guess I sorta fit that
description in my dotage.

It would be nice if we could find another secluded spot on the WWW and
continue on, but thanks to MS, that is not going to happen.

Love to all and take care of yourselves, you hear?? Seeing as I am the
oldest (which I have never admitted to before), you better listen up, OK??
8-))

Big hugs from the two of us........you people are the best!!

Hi Figgs,

I didn't think I would be making another post here but it's too hard not to
having just read your post. <g>

As you say many of us have had lots of fun here in the Win Me NGs over the
last ten years. I can't believe that it was as long ago as 2004 that we met
up and I took Ron and yourself for a meal at La Barca here in London. BTW
your memory has slightly let you down as Noel was with me in Seattle in
February when we let you hold sway in the NGs in our absence.

It would be nice if we could find another secluded spot on the WWW and
continue on, but thanks to MS, that is not going to happen.
There are places we could gather it we were so inclined, just not on the MS
NNTP server so you would have to use eternal-september or one of the other
free usenet servers. We could even set up our own newsgroup. What about
alt.social.figgs.and.cream? <vbg>

I'm sorry to read of your, Ron and Elayne's various traumas and ills and
wish you all the very best as I do others reading this who are not in the
best of health. I've got one big outstanding job I'm trying to finish off
and when that's done will try and concentrate on writing some e-mails so
just hold on, something should hopefully be winging its way in your
direction soon - and to Joan and Shane as well.

I'm copying this post to e-mail just in case this NG has gone before you get
a chance to see my post.

Hugs and kisses to everyone (not sure about kisses for Noel <g>)

Signing off,

Mike

We'll miss you as well Figgs, but at least we can keep in touch via email
although that doesn't seem to have the same feeling as this ng.

We've had a lot of fun in here, is it 10 years, that means I've been using
a computer for 12 years in September that's when I started with 98 and first
found the newsgroups and Jim Eshelmans site AumHa, crikey where's the time
gone, it'll also be 5 years in February that we packed up the evil weed. <g>

I've saved some of these messages so lets see if this one gets to you all,
if not through MS I have the ng's coming in through BT and
eternal-september.

I'm now going to see if that bridge thing has worked this morning so I can
sort out just what's on that.
I wont say goodbye as I'm bound to find some way of seeing you all around on
the net and I have phone contact with some of you, see you on the other side
