Harry, since your post has been up for a few hours with no replies I can only
guess that the "regulars" are too deep into adult beverages this New Years
Eve. Feliz Año Nuevo.

I thought so........Robin Hood was nowhere near Cumbria, lol. Now I will
have to check my handy map of England behind me.....still have all of your
names on yellow stickies on it.

Shane........you are a ditz!! It is well southeast of the *armpit of
england*........Stockport!! Not sure if it or Manchester were the worst.
The rest of England was excellent, except for those two weirdos that we
stayed with in Dorset........we still shake our heads over that one.

Hey Mikey.......when we win the lottery, we will come over and take YOU out
for dinner. Think Lizzie will have us over for tea?? Not likely, lol.

Sorry. Typo. Should have been 100 miles - though actually it's closer to 140
anyway. As for SW it would help if they didn't show us our island
misaligned, one consequence of which for me at least is that I've spent my
entire life having an instinctively incorrect notion of where the parts of
the UK are in that regard. I only really know which way I am looking because
of the direction of the sun or stars.

Though Mike is right, of course.

Why not write and ask her? You never know, she's got enough spare cash she
might just pay for you all to fly over for tea and cakes.

I've managed to get myself both a streaming cold and a touch of bronchitis
so I'm not going to be going anywhere for the next week or so where it's not
warm and dry. Look out bed, here I come! :-)

Yep......sitting in a pub in Chester, trying to learn the game for the

beard....and scared the locals half to death!! Only Ron and I knew he was a
big pussycat.......bwa ha ha.

My ancestors disappeared off the face of the earth. Got them back to the
early 1700's and we descend from one brother who went to Scotland and made
big bucks as a *mowdieman*. Testing your Scottish slang here.

Bowness-on-Windermere was really pretty. Bob and Jean (owners of our
Scottish ancestral home) took us to Whitehaven, then over a horrendous
mountain to Bowness. I needed 3 valiums for that one. Can't remember the
name.......Dead Man's Pass?? That's what I would have called it. Even the

Hi Georgie.........yes, that was the one. Frightening place. Had about 3
drinks at the bottom before the hill climb (by car). I wish we could get
back over there. The old guy wants to go back to our smallest province

Just had haggis for our evening meal, with tatties and cauliflower (well we

It was intended for last Friday but we weren't quite ready (after Thursday

Hi Heather, Happy New Year to you also....

Mike's idea of going up backwards is the best method,
you can see where you're wenting from,
but you can't see where you're coming towards. ???

I see there's been a few answers since my last visit, <g> definitely a
few more than 10 miles away I'd say, I know the name Bowness in fact we
had a holiday in Bowness-on-Windermere a few years ago very enjoyable it
was to, I think it might have been the year before you went there.
2004, was that the year you met up with Noel and borrowed his phone to
talk to me ?
Yep......sitting in a pub in Chester, trying to learn the game for the
ongoing soccer finals. LOL. Noel came in....all in black with a wild
beard....and scared the locals half to death!! Only Ron and I knew he
was a big pussycat.......bwa ha ha.
My ancestors disappeared off the face of the earth. Got them back to
the early 1700's and we descend from one brother who went to Scotland
and made big bucks as a *mowdieman*. Testing your Scottish slang here.
Bowness-on-Windermere was really pretty. Bob and Jean (owners of our
Scottish ancestral home) took us to Whitehaven, then over a horrendous
mountain to Bowness. I needed 3 valiums for that one. Can't remember
the name.......Dead Man's Pass?? That's what I would have called it.
Even the sheep looked scared. (G)

Born and brought up in Nottingham, East Midlands <g>
About 10 miles south of the Lake District.
Ahhhh.....so she would then recognize my maiden name. Too bad I was
the only live *Bowness* in the area in 2004, grin. Shocked the heck
out of the Bowness-on-Windermere restaurant manager when I said "if I
can prove I am a Bowness, can I have a free dinner??" I did, he
didn't.......must have been a Scot. (G)

Both, I seem to recall, being lovely 1 in 3s. I remember my father back in
the 50s having on one occasion to go up in reverse as this was a lower gear
than first (our Ford Consul only had a three speed gearbox and synchromesh
only when changing between second and top).

Happy New Year, one and all - even if a little belated.

Heavy snow up here for most of the day - had to cancel a visit, as I wasn't
sure of being able to get home again!.
Seems to have stopped now, with 3 inches on the ground (it's on the way down
to you now Joan - have fun in the am!), and the local council have
reportedly run out of grit/salt.... Oh Joy!

Yes. My neighbour abandoned her car on the way home from work this evening,
along, apparently, with half the town. Hopefully the grocery delivery
tomorrow evening will still happen! And the firewood delivery Friday. And
the coal delivery that _began_ with an as good as unspecified date but
hopefully will arrive sometime this week!

The bit I find amazing is they have it or are supposed to have it worst dahn
Sarf! I can just see the fuel deliveries coming when the cold snap's over.
At
least I'm not a brass monkey. Small mercies. Yes, that's what I call a Happy
New Year, a little behind! And I plan to lose the holiday excess elsewhere
by end of Jan. Wherever she is.

Lordy, only 3 inches?? Try a foot or more. But I forget that the UK is not
used to snow. I guess it is like our first snowfall of the year.........no
one knows quite how to drive in it. We had black ice and a lot of accidents
the past few days. So I wisely stayed in. Today it was about minus 20C
with the windchill. Bracing!! I actually did up my coat. (G)

We got it, just a small flurry in the morning then a couple of hours of blue
skies and sunshine before the heavens opened and we got covered. We had
another flurry in the night but at the moment I'm looking out at the
sunshine, although there are a few clouds about.

Tomorrow will be about 18F here.......forget what that is in Cent. cuz I

To stay warm.......layer your clothes. And Ron says.....get snow tires.
They are absolutely required here. Lordy, remember tire/tyre chains??

Well I got my groceries, and he was only about 10 minutes outside my
delivery slot but I don't think I'm going to bother trying to go and
do a top up shop tomorrow I'm not going to risk there still being any
ice around, I can't afford to fall <g>
Johns got to go out our kitchen light has given up the ghost so he's
got to go get a new fixture then my son-in-laws cousin will come and
fit it for us, although we'll probably get a 5 ' one instead of the
6' that we have now, the tubes are easier to get and cheaper. It's
not done bad though we had it fitted just before we moved in here
nearly 17 years ago. It's been dry and sunny here all day but of course
very cold and the
forecast for tomorrow is the more of the same brrrrrrrrrrr

No point in tyre chains here since we're in a one in 50 year event or
something like that. Chains are a sensible investment if snow and ice is a
regular feature of one's winters but that's not the case here with this
winter seemingly being the worst since the 1960s. Temperatures in central
London tonight are predicted to be -3 to -4C (25-26F) with down to -9C (16F)
in surrounding towns but apparently it could get as low as -20C (-4F) in the
countryside. Brrrrrrrrrrrrr. Thankfully we have the Gulf stream since
otherwise we'd be a lot colder here in London given that we are 8 degrees
further north than Toronto.

I hope you enjoyed your dinner.

You folks have been getting a taste of our warmer weather, it seems.
Tomorrow will be about 18F here.......forget what that is in Cent.
cuz I avoid it when at all possible. I can't "feel" how warm or cold
it is in Centigrade.
To stay warm.......layer your clothes. And Ron says.....get snow
tires. They are absolutely required here. Lordy, remember tire/tyre
chains??
Off for a chicken dinner at Swiss Chalet.........keep warm.

oops......I am living in the past it seems. Ron says chains were banned
eons ago cuz they chewed up the pavement. Doesn't seem to matter about
people getting *chewed up*.

You are a fair bit warmer than we are/were. It was minus 24C for a few days
due to windchill. I didn't go out unless I had to. Jan. & Feb. are always
the worst months here. My arthritis is absolutely killing me due to the
cold and damp. Haven't had my hands swell like this for a few years. 8-((

And even tho we are probably one of the most southern parts of Canada,
latitude-wise, and are protected by Lake Ontario (causes major snow storms
dump on Buffalo, snicker), we are still bloody cold. I see in the paper
that Florida is down in the single digits C. I do believe Edgar Cayce's
predictions might just be coming true. (axis shift of the poles causing
weather changes.........and he died in the 1940's, so never heard of global
warming).

Just seen a report that in parts of Wales it was down to -15°C last night, I
know my little gadget on my desktop, computer, at the moment is showing -3°C
for the area here, it was -6°C earlier but there are blue skies and
sunshine, it hasn't melted the snow on next doors roof though, I can see
that while I'm typing this <g>

That was actually rather balmy, Har........we are heading into another deep
freeze (cold weather alert) today. Ron said it was bloody cold out at noon.
I don't bother checking anymore. I just keep piling on the layers and
finally broke down and wore gloves, grin.

Your weather isn't much different from the north European, is it, especially
the UK's. As Mike pointed out, it is a fifty-year affair there, just as we
have the hundred-year floods here in the States.
That could provide some comfort, as opposed to having it happen every year,
if this were next year.
We pray it may subside, sooner rather than later.
Keep and stay warm,

Harry.

Good to see everyone nestled down to face the new year '2010'.
As of now it's like a fresh snow cover without any footprints.
Hope 'they' don't mess it all up for us.
My Spanish is nonexistent, Corday, but I'll drink to it <g>.

Harry, since your post has been up for a few hours with no replies I can only
guess that the "regulars" are too deep into adult beverages this New Years
Eve. Feliz Año Nuevo.
