Post by Mike MPost by SeanI have an old computer with windows me on it. I was wondering if
windows updates would still work?
Yes.
Post by Seanlike would i be able to update it
so i could get whatever security updates came out before that i may
have missed?
At present this shouldn't be a problem but please note that no new patches
have been posted for the Win Me operating system since Win Me went out of
extended support in July 2006.
The fact this is a trifle old aside - reinstalling the many old versions of
Windows I've been doing lately has been quite a surprise in having found
that Windows Update doesn't work for most of them with their original IE
versions! I wanted to leave the OSes in cosmetically-RTM state, but had to
upgrade IE to get the list of which updates WU considered were required (as
opposed to e.g. Technet's Security Bulletin searches or the several
enthusiast sites that have slightly different takes on what is required.
While Technet and the enthusiast sites are frequently very useful, one does
not really require security updates so much as reliability ones).
Oddly it seems that for those that are not supported by IE 5.5, IE 5.01 is
sufficient, but if an OS can use IE 5.5, then IE 5.01 won't work. Of course,
they use different versions of WU so it isn't quite as arbitrary as it can
seem. More mindlessly beaurocratic. Of course, once you update IE to use WU,
you're offered different updates than were you on the original build - so it
is not obvious which ones would be required were you to acquire the updates
for offline installation, then reinstall the OS (or less reliably, roll back
the IE version).
This is quite strong South African Chardonnay! I think I shall stop here,
before I become more incomprehensible than paraincomprehensible. Yet I drank
enough yesterday dahn the club watching Chelsea win the title 8 - 0, so it's
not as if I'm out of practice!
I'll just have another then.
Where's the organ grinder?
